I am not a huge fan of Estimated. I want to be though. Can someone recomend some really outstanding versions? So far the only one I have found that I truly enjoy is from 12/26/79. Peace and Thanks

If you want something different than the 'usual' pairing of Estimated~Eyes (such as 12-28-78 and 09-02-83) then try out 04-01-80 or 07-13-81 or 09-26-81 or 04-19-82 or 11-02-85. All good shows with quality sound too.

Colgate Univ. NY 11-4-77. Kick ass version and first ever coming out if Eyes' instead of the other way around!

Whole show is great - both SBD and AUD versions - get both!

I have had trouble with this tune as well, even though I am a fanatical and obssessed deadhead with a 1/2 million shows. ( not quite that much ).

In any case, I agree with Grendel, I really like that version from 4/19/82. Also check out 11/2/85.

OK, Since evrybody and their brother weighed in on this, I will too. I'll start by saying that I am the biggest fan of the post-Brent era, but since no one mentioned this version, I will. 6.24.91, Bonner Springs, is a really good version. I believe this features the 2-keyboard configuration of the band, and Vince (I can't believe it) does some really nice fills. He plays a sort of 'mock-Branford-sax-role in the background that works really well. It's definitely worth checking out. Also worth checking out (I don't think this was mentioned either) is 10.25.79, from New Haven; some nice Jery/Brent goings-on.

Ooops, little amendment here. I meant to say I was, in fact, NOT the biggest fan of the post-Brent era. There you go, for what that is worth :)

And then Dark Star.

Every Dead Head should check out the David Murray album "Dark Star" which is devoted to his instrumental avant garde interpretations of Dead songs including Shakedown, Estimated, Dark Star, and others. Great album if you love Ornette Coileman-style jazz.

Grendel - do you remember Murray touring this album and Weir sitting in? Must've been '94/'95... I seem to remember Gans playing something like this on his show.

No, I don't but that sounds fantastic! Any idea where that could be heard, if it still exists? (I think Murray is great, but then, i'm a big jazz fan ;-)

4-19-82 Baltimore has my favorite Estimated...great Bobby screams, Jerry riffs, PLUS it's the only version i've ever heard that COMES BACK to the crescendo refrain after getting into the free-form jamming part.

This is also the infamous "Ravenspace" show in which Phil )among others) partakes of a nitrous tank during space and recites from Poe's "The Raven."

Whole show is terrific and the Estimated is worth the DL alone.
